Formal Proposal

Today in lesson we worked as a team to come up with different materials we can use in our documentary:


Topic: *Chocolate: covered, the love of chocolate


Type: *Mixed


Style: *Informal


Channel and Scheduling: *Channel 4, 9:00pm, Sunday


We chose channel 4 because our target audience is teens and young adults. The reason why our documentary is on at 9:00pm is that our target audience watch TV the most at Post-watershed; also a lot of our audience watch prime time television, therefore by having it show at 9, it’s the time of water-shed and the end of prime time, so we get more viewers.

Title sequence: *(stop motion) chocolate come in and unwraps, bites get taken out of it and the bits left over get melted and they come back to show the word ‘chocolate: covered’

Codes and Conventions of Interviews





  • Interviewee on either the left or right of the screen.
  • Uses Chromakey or Green Screen to superimpose images onto the background.
  • The Graphics are White, Sans Serif and are postioned on either the left or right of the screen.
  • Usually Medium Close Up, Close up or Mid shot.
  • Interviewee always on the oppostie side to the camera and always looking at the interviewer never the camera.
  • The voiceover is usually young and speaks standard english.
  • The interviewee's eyeline is in the top thrid of the screen.
  • No source of light behind the interviewee.
  • Questions are edited out.
  • Cutaways are used to break up the interviews and avoid jump cuts.

Codes and Conventions of Documentaries

Today in Media we created a list of the codes and conventions of documentaries. Here is the list we created;

Type Of Documentary:

Usually Mixed Documentaries.


Themes:

A common theme within the documentaries we watched was 'The Power of the Media'.

Camerawork:

The common camerawork techniques that are used in documentaries are Close ups, Medium Close ups, Handheld Camerawork and Point of View Shots.

Mise-En-Scene: 

Usually Chromakey is used within documentaries and usually during an interview


Sound:

Usually the voiceover is male, young and speaks standard English.


Editing:

Elliptical editing is a technique that is commonly used along with slow motion, fast motion and montage.


Archive Material:

Images and videos are the main samples of archive material that are used


Graphics:

The common font for graphics is white sans serif that informs the audience of the name and usually the profession or relevance of the person to the documentary


Narrative Structure:

The common narrative structures are Non-linear, Closed, Circular and Single Strand narratives
